I have a '68 street Camaro with a mildly warm 454 and a TH400 tranny. The tranny

shift kit and a TCI 2000 stall. It works great,
but what can I do to keep the tranny in low?
At about 4500 rpm it's gonna shift, like it
or not. I'd at least like to prolong it to 5500
or 6000.
I currently run 12.22 and I can't help but think it could do better.
Thanks.
Todd
Todd,
You need more of a competition type shift
kit, one that will give you full manual control
along with full automatic. In your case, there
are some modifications that need to be done
to give you manual control. The reason that
the valve body was set up that way, I hear,
is that 1965-66 General Motors vehicles had
too many blown-up engines under warranty and
they set up the TH400 valve bodies so it would
shift from first to second at a certain rpm
whether the driver wanted to or not.
There are some other internal modifications
that need to be done to make that 400 really
work good.

QUESTION 2
Mike,
We have a Hurst Vmatic 2 shifter for a Turbo 400 transmission and are
wondering if it can be converted over to work on a Powerglide tranny.
The Wohlerts
Dear Wohlerts,
We have sent shifters back to Hurst to have
them altered. It would be worth a call to them
to see your options, and possibly could save
you a few bucks.
Mike
