QUESTION 1:
Mike,
Hi, I'm running a Pontiac 455 with Aluminum Edelbrock heads Victor Intake and 1050 Dominator making about 750hp at 6800 and 640 tq at 5100. I really would like to get tire rpm up where the comp guys are with their 9800 rpm engines. Is there any overdrive transmission that can do this or will they break? I am running tube chassis firebird 2370 lbs with me in it, glide transbrake, 8.95@ 153 mph.
Rob
Rob,
Tire speed is vehicle speed.
The only thing that changes is gear ratio through
the trans and rear end. Horsepower is the key
thing but also gearing to use it best. We have
used a unit called a gear vendor overdrive,
which is 22% over on the back of some Powerglides
to give us a little more gear.
Thanks,
Mike
Question 2:
Mike,
I have read some of your answers to transmission questions off of the Internet
and am very impressed with your knowledge base.
I have a question of my own. I recently purchased
a rebuilt Turbo 350 for my '77 Nova bracket
car. The transmission works fine other than

is normally located under heavy acceleration.
Does anyone make a plug for the detent cable
hole since I will not need the cable for a racing
application?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Chris Root
Chris,
I get calls all the time
about that pesky cable hole. On a performance
trans where this cable is not being used, you
should tap the hole from the outside with a
1/4" pipe tap, so you can install a pipe plug
to take care of it once and for all. If you
don't feel good about that you can make a plug
out of an old cable.
Thanks,
Mike
