I
have a ’27 Coupe with a 460 BB Chevy
and PG transmission. What is the proper trans
mount to use, solid or poly? The engine is
solid mounted, full cage, and is used strictly
for bracket racing.
Thanks,
Peter Johnson

Peter, The proper mount to use is a poly
mount! We do not want the transmission to be a rigid part
of the chassis so we put a flexible transmission mount
to absorb the flex. If we mount the transmission solid
we risk bell housing breakage from flex. The transmission
must flex with the chassis.
Thanks,
Mike

Hey
guys, I have a weird thing with my turbo
400 in my Chevelle. It is behind a 454. The
car goes into gear fine. Under normal acceleration,
the car smoothly but kind of slowly, shifts
to second and then shifts very firmly into
third. Another strange thing is if I stand
on the gas it will usually chirp the tires
and then of course chirps them in third.
Finally, under medium acceleration the car
shifts smoothly into second and firm into
third, unless I let off the gas a little,
in which it will what I call “drag” or
shift slowly into second gear. I know my vacuum
is low on the car, but can you think of any
reason why this is happening? Not sure if it
has a shift kit. I bought the car from someone
and have not touched the tranny.
Thanks,
Steve Smith

Steve, It sounds like your intermediate clutch
is burned; it may have started out as a transmission setup
problem, possibly the pressure is too low to hold the load
or something like that. At this point it would warrant
an inspection internally to assess the damage. In other
words tear it apart and eyeball the internals; it may have
a clutch problem or a second gear spring problem. The transmission
may need to be tuned up to match the engine and car setup.
Thanks,
Mike
