TUCSON TESTING

SCELZI SETS 1,000-FOOT AND QUARTER-MILE LOW E.T. FOR TOP FUEL
Defending Winston Top Fuel champ Gary Scelzi (above) had the big numbers through Sunday. Late that afternoon, Scelzi launched the Alan Johnson-tuned Winston dragster hard and recorded a .871 60-footer, 2.180 at 330 feet, 3.933 at 1,000 and a 4.647/304.60 at the quarter. The 1,000 and quarter were bests.

Kenny Bernstein topped the 60-foot efforts with a .840 on Sunday morning. Other decent quarter-mile efforts for Top Fuel were Doug Herbert's Friday 4.70 and Kenny Bernstein's 4.89.

PRUDHOMME CARS, SARVER, AND BARTONE'S WWF-FORTS STAND OUT
The Winston team didn't do too badly in Funny Car. While Scelzi was ripping in Top Fuel, Bruce Sarver in the Johnson-tuned e-moola.com Pontiac Firebird set low e.t. for the Funny Cars at Tucson. On Sunday afternoon, Sarver ripped off the line to the tune of .890 at 60-foot, 3.292 at the half, a stout 4.116 at 1,000 feet and a blistering 4.835/297.02, a speed which indicated an early shutoff.

Right on Sarver's heels were the Don Prudhomme-owned Skoal Racing team drivers Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr. This pair waiting until Monday morning to cut loose with Johnson hitting a 4.869/312.64 and Capps a 4.871/312.78 (top speed) a few minutes later.

On Sunday former Winston Alcohol Funny Car champ Tony Bartone (above), to the surprise of no one, easily qualified for his Funny Car license in Jerry Toliver's "the Rock" WWF car with a 5.047/307.86.

FORCE STILL RUNS FOURS
Defending 10-time Winston Funny car champ John Force was at Tucson with his and teammate Tony Pedregon's Castrol cars. Force and Pedregon, like so many drivers, fought to get traction with only Force receiving a decent full quarter-mile ticket. The Castrol GTX kingpin ripped to a 4.990/243.24 on Sunday. It had to be encouraging for the champ to note that his 60-foot was a .881 with tire chatter slowing him a little to a 3.305 at the half mark. The 1,000-foot time was a parachute-influenced 4.164.
