Asbury, Missouri - Bobby Marriott and Jim Pruett are determined to take
the battle for the 2003 Outlaw Fuel Altered Champion down to the last
race of the year based on their performances at Asbury, Missouri's
MoKan Dragway on September 6th. The Outlaws were in town for the rain
makeup event from Labor Day and the fans were not disappointed.
Pruett, from Paul's Valley, Oklahoma, came into Asbury with a slim
points lead over the field. Marriott of Pilot Point, Texas came into
the event with one goal - earn as many points as possible for the
weekend.
In the first pair in the first round of qualifying, Marriott took his
"Shockwave" to a 5.74 e.t. that stood as low of qualifying. Donnie
Massey of Little Elm, Texas, the defending series champion, placed in
the second spot with a 5.75. Pruett was right behind in the third slot
with a 5.79, his best in the second session of qualifying. Twelve
altereds attempted to make the eight-car field, with the points
contenders all at the top of the field.
This race featured the "Chicago Style" eliminations, with the quickest
two winners from the first round facing each other for the final. With
the number one and two cars in the points battling it out, it seemed
almost destined that they would be the finalists, and they were.
Marriott's first round winning time of 5.75 seconds was the quickest
winner and coming up in second with a 5.83 was Pruett's "Quick Signs"
backed entry. In what has been a season of close final rounds for the
Altereds, this one was no different. Pruett deep staged and still
stepped up to a 5.69, but Marriott did him one better and ran Low E.T.
of the meet with a 5.63.
Marriott walked away with the maximum points he could but Pruett held
his ground and still came out of MoKan with the points lead, by less
than one round. The Outlaw's final two races are at Denton Dragway in
Denton, Texas. Expect to see a showdown in Texas as the Okie and Texan
contingents battle it out for the 2003 series champ.
