Wondering about the new season
2/20/03
Just
Wondering...Since NASCAR has finally figured out that most
of their tracks won't support two races and are talking
about moving some dates to new tracks, will NHRA execs consider
the same option for Chicago and Las Vegas? Would NHRA consider
offering dates to IHRA facilities like Martin, MI or Virginia
Motorsports Park?
Just Wondering...Why not increase the qualified fields in NHRA Pro Mod
and Pro Stock classes to 16 and 32 cars respectively, have the first
round of eliminations on Saturday night and give the ticket buyer a bigger
bang for their buck?
Just Wondering...Since most IHRA national events have more fans on Saturday
night than Sunday, why not run the first round of eliminations
in the Pro Classes on Saturday night and put the jets and
fireworks on Sunday instead? It might increase the Sunday
gate.
Just Wondering...Why hasn't NHRA made a neck restraint device and a full
face helmet mandatory yet? Are they just waiting for another racer
fatality before they make a rule?
Just Wondering...When will the "suits" in control of sports entertainment
in this country get the clue that on average ticket pricing for sporting
events including drag racing is just too high for many fans? NASCAR, NHL
hockey, and the NBA have already found that out. Are you listening, drag
racing promoters?
Just Wondering...Will a couple of national event facilities have to declare
bankruptcy and close their doors before ticket prices start to drop?
Just Wondering...If NHRA or IHRA would quit televising their national
events would more people buy tickets to watch the races in person?
Maybe we need to fill the stands first and then worry about the couch
potatoes.
Just Wondering...Who really benefits monetarily from NHRA
or IHRA broadcasting their national events besides the Series
sponsors and Pro Class Racers? Where are all of the new
corporate sponsors that drag racing was going to attract
by paying for national events to be broadcast on ESPN? Oh
yeah, and just who do you think actually supplies the cash
to pay the bill for televising the events...the spectators
and racers.
Just Wondering...When is IHRA going to throw in the towel and adopt
NHRA's classes, names and rules? Does anyone really believe spectators,
manufacturers, or most racers care anymore? Why not homogenize the
sport, consolidate the classes, money, racers and tracks, and really give
NASCAR and Indy Car racing a run for their money in terms of attendance
and exposure?
Just Wondering...Since NHRA added IHRA's Top Sportsman, Pro Modified
and Nitro Harleys to their programs will IHRA invent new classes to
replace them and continue to offer the fan an alternative to NHRA? How
about Pro Jet Dragsters and Funny Cars? I'm serious, because I don't
think Mountain Motored Pro Stocks alone can carry the load.
Just Wondering...Whatever happened to the Nitro Coupes after Bill
Kuhlmann went six-flat a few years back?
Just Wondering... Are there more nostalgia sanctioning organizations than
there are nostalgia fans and cars?
Just Wondering...How many Pro cars have carried the NitroFish
sponsorship over the years? Seems like they have at least one or two
new standard bearers every year.
Just Wondering...Despite everything, is there anything better than sitting
in the lights during a nitro session with your buds, a bud and a few Buds
watching fuel cars streak by with flames over the roof or wing?
Just Wondering...Will one of those "million dollar" drag races actually ever
have a million dollar payout? How can dirt track promoter Earl Baltes have
several races a year that pay the winner a million and drag racing can't
have even one?
Just Wondering...When RJR bails out of Winston Cup racing will they make
a return to NHRA or IHRA drag racing? Drag racing would have to look like
a bargain after the $20 million or so a year they've been spending
supporting the Winston Cup Series.
Just Wondering...When is Brandon Bernstein's name going to find its way
onto the team's car? That action would at least put an end to the rumors
floating around the sport that Kenny is wanting to get back in the driver's
seat. Why wouldn't Brandon's name be lettered on the car as the driver
anyway?
Just Wondering...How will Pro Mod fans react to IHRA and NHRA Pro Mods
if they continue to run 6.20's this year after Mitch Stott has proven that
just taking 150 pounds or so of weight out of the legal cars transforms
them into five-second door cars.
Just Wondering...How can they keep them as Nostalgia Fuel cars when a
majority of them are switching over to billet cylinder heads and blocks in
addition to already having data loggers, 44 amp magneto systems, and
$5,000 8-71 blowers?
Just Wondering...Will Nitro Harleys eventually replace the gas buners at
NHRA and, if not, why not?
Just Wondering...Why not just turn the boards off at national events for
the .90 classes and just have win/lose lights? It might make the racing a
little more exciting to watch and, unless those guys are going to run a
four-second, 300-mph lap, who cares?
Just Wondering...Why not make a rule that all .90 class cars at national
events have to be under full throttle to the eighth-mile? Why make fans
in the stands watch race cars go 100 feet and then coast for a couple of
hundred feet before getting back on the throttle? Attention "Super"
class racers, watching that act is boring, boring, boring!
