A final thrust bearing adds a measure of protection against forces against the cover during deceleration or freewheeling. The cover is then precision welded to the impeller. This is why the impeller always spins at the same rate of speed as the crankshaft.
An anti-balloon plate on the impeller prevents the tremendous hydraulic forces from ballooning, or expansion of the converter. The B&M converter dynamometer allows for complete testing of torque converter characteristics under varying conditions.
