Well how 'bout those speeds at Houston? After four races
this season and some changes to limit speed by NHRA, average
top speeds are up 2.8% in Top Fuel. Average top speed so far
this year in Top Fuel is an amazing 317.79, up from a season
ending 308.90 in 2004. When I first started keeping stats
in 1987 the average top speed in Top Fuel was 260.60. So,
we are up 21.9% in 18 years.
In Funny Car the fuel coupes are up 1.4% from last year. Average
top speed so far in Funny Car is 312.01, up from 307.65 in
2004. In 1987 the average top speed in Funny Car was 249.74,
so the average is up 24.9%. (If a car runs that speed now,
I considered that run a shut-off run, and don't even record
it.) Also, notice that the trend line in Funny Car is steeper
than Top Fuel! Will they go faster that Top Fuel some day?
Notes about the graphs: The black line is a calculated trend
line and the blue line on the charts, are the actual data.
