Here we have the grungy old tank below
the shiny
new sumped unit. What a deal!
Here is the finished product. Man,
what a sweet way to get
a real racing type sumped tank without ANY modifications!
So far I’ve made it out to two test and tune sessions
at good ol’ Cedar Falls Raceway and made eight runs
with a best of 11.45/116.52 in 2500 ft. of corrected altitude.
The 60 foots have been hard to get on a T&T day but I
did record a 1.500” on one run. Apparently that was
just to tease me about getting a 1.40” sixty in the
future. It will come. More testing is in order and I need
to experiment with some jetting on the Speed Demon 650 carb,
try different ignition timing with the MSD system, try different
intakes, looser torque converter, etc. Whew! Hopefully I’ll
leave some time for racing!
I’m planning on attending the IHRA Division 3 race
in Byron, IL, the end of July so hopefully things will be
a little more sorted out by then. You see, 11.45 wouldn’t
have been a bad place to start if this was earlier in the
year because my national index was 12.35. Nine tenths under
ain't bad, but recently IHRA gave us another enhancement and
dropped ALL Crate Motor indexes by a whopping 2 tenths. So
now my index is a 12.15 and I’m only 7 tenths under
so far.
The potential good news is that I’m racing and I heard
from two very good sources that IHRA has realized the error
in there ways and will reconstitute Division 5 for 2006! I
hope so, otherwise I’m done with Class Racing after
this season. There’s always hope!
'Til next time, remember, when in doubt…… do
a wheelie!!
