Remembering Kalitta and Independence Day
Ironically when I learned about the death of Scott Kalitta I was at home watching the
movie Bucket List. The moral of the movie is simple, “You only live once, so live life to the fullest.” In the movie these two hospital patients find out they only have a few months to live so they make up a list of the things they want to do before their demise. The list and movie is called “BUCKET LIST” for an obvious reason. In the movie driving a race car is one of the things that was on that list. The truth is that most people never have the opportunity to do everything they truly want to do in life. By the same token the opposite tends to be true of the likes of professional drag racers. Most professional drag racers tend to live a dream that most people can never imagine. To be able to do what you love the most in life is truly amazing. Traveling the world, meeting fans and competing a sport that you love. Let’s face it that is truly amazing.
The tragedy of a drag racing death strikes at the heart of the drag racing world. The painstaking tragedy offers solace only in the knowledge that in the act of death he or she was doing what they loved the most, living their dream. The ceremonies in Norwalk, Ohio the Kalitta family celebrated Scott’s life and many accomplishments in his death may they find the strength to move forward in their lives. He will live on in their memories and ours too.
As we celebrate Independence Day think of the freedom our county possess even in these difficult times. Remember those who have and continue to sacrifice their lives and families for the safety and freedom of our country. These are the unsung heroes who are rarely recognized. The next time you are at a sporting event and hear the United States of Americas National Anthem take off your hat, put your hand over your heart and be proud of your country and all it stands for. Keep your prayers and thoughts with the Kalitta family during this difficult time.
