Drag Racing Online: The Magazine

Volume VIII, Issue 8, Page
Pete Farber’s insane blown 526-inch Hemi-powered ‘79 Dodge Ram pickup made the Denso Pro Street field at 6.82/200 before blowing the tires off in round one against Steve Spiess’ IHRA Pro Stock Cobalt. As Tim Essick’s Maryland Mustang breaks traction in the far lane, Canadian Sandro Sementilli pushes on to a 7.24/197 in the opening round of NMCA 10.5W Super Street; 632-inch nitrous Chevy-powered Mustang qualified third at 7.15/197 and went to the semis before falling to Dan Millen.
Perfect NMRA Drag Radial launch balance achieved by Jason Lee’s Ohio-based 359-inch ‘86 Mustang was no consolation for this first-round redlight against eventual winner John Kolivas, whose white Mississippi ‘95 Cobra was busy recording Low ET at 8.226/172.73 in the other lane. Don Rayburn’s outrageous Indy-based 638-inch ‘72 Gremlin is a 7.70/175 contender in NMCA’s Nostalgia Pro Street division but a redlight by six thousandths ended his assault on the 20-car field in the first round. Incredibly, Brian Ambrosini qualified a 485-inch AMC-powered version in Nitto 10.5W Super Street with a 7.95/174!
Ohioan Troy Coughlin expresses his displeasure with Illinois weather while scouting the groove before Denso Pro Street qualifying. Team Jeg’s carbureted 800-inch Cobalt qualified seventh at 6.65/210 in record bump (6.91/200) 16-car field and went to the semi-finals on massive holeshots over Steve Miller’s turbocharged S-10 pickup, (6.67/210 to 6.65/210), and IHRA Pro Stock hitter/Route 66 owner Steve Spiess’ Cobalt, (6.74/209 to 6.62/213!), before shaking the tires against Brian Robbins’ blown ‘72 Hurst/Olds. Legendary Ford sportsman superstar, (and major global energy commissar), Don Bowles wheeled one of a dozen different test vehicles for event Grand Marshall Jack Roush; 2006 Mustang uses a factory supercharged 330-inch modular motor to hit 9.60s at over 140 mph!
Floridian Outlaw campaigner Susie Vanderspool was astounding in her blown Chevy-powered BMW sedan with 8.40/165 performance and “double-oh” RTs. One of the most colorful of all Pro Street entries, Steve King’s wild blown Viper ran 214 mph in qualifying but fell to a Troy Coughlin holeshot in round one, 6.67/210 to 6.65/210.
