THE FABULOUS FUEL ALTS

In this reporter’s opinion the most authentic Fuel Altered he has seen in a long time is the ‘23 T roadster owned, built and driven by Rockford, Ill., racer “Cannonball” Johnson. The T sports an all-iron, supercharged, 392 Chrysler Hemi burning 80 percent nitro in the tank.

The roadster has a 104-inch wheelbase and literally used up most of the track on each pass. It was the most entertaining car at the event. Look for a complete feature on the car and driver in the July issue of Drag Racing Online.

Last of the touring fuel altereds are Dave Hough’s  “Nanook” and Ron Hope’s “Rat Trap.” Midwest driver “Rapid” Randy Baker was doing double duty at this race driving both “Nanook” and Danny Miller’s AA/FC Maverick. Baker ran a best of 6.336/211.23 and Hope’s best was a 7.058/194.83.

Sean Belt, a former Barklage Racing Pro Mod team crewman and certified altered (in many ways) freak made passes in this Kansas-based ’48 Fiat with a mild 20% nitro 80% alky fuel mixture. The engine is a state of the art Hemi with a big charger, fuel pump and 44-amp MSD magneto. Belt shoed the altered to a best of 6.757/214.18 for the class’s Top Speed of the meet. The team is planning on “upping the percentages” next season.
