WILD STREET

George Raygoza in his ‘68 Chevy Nova saved the best pass for the final round in Wild Street, as he laid down a fine 8.120/175.68 to defeat Al Jimenez’s ‘72 turbo Camaro. Al was a close second, though, at 8.208/177.18 mph.

QUICK STREET

Quick Street runs on a 9.60 index. Kenny Younts’ ‘67 Nova ran a 9.604 during  qualifying, but Chris Bickerstaff from Rosemond, CA, ran a 9.544/145.42 for the win on a double breakout, as his competition, Michael Hadtrich of N. Las Vegas, broke out slightly quicker at 9.535/139.93.

MUSTANG MADNESS

There was a huge 21-car turnout for the Mustang Madness class, but point leader Dan Maricano of nearby Alta Loma, CA, once again dominated the class with a 10.427 at 127.98 mph. His .008 reaction time might have been the key in the win. He defeated Gardena’s Gary Guerreo’s ‘83 Mustang at 11.876, 103.41 mph. This Marciano guy is unreal!

MEAN STREET

The 10.60 index class is called Mean Street and it was a very tight race indeed. After Hemet’s Joe Bennett and his trusty red Vega set the pace at 10.604/125.33, Charles Jackson’s immaculate Chevy Nova from Los Angeles narrowly defeated many-time winner Mike Nordahl and his black Vega. Nordahl got the holeshot (.049 RT to Jackson’s .134 RT), but Charles had his Nova dialed in perfectly at a fine 10.605/125.72 to Nordahl’s 10.726 at 126.23 mph

OPEN COMP

It almost turned out “double win” for Mike Nordahl as the Fontana racer swept the Open Comp honors with the very same Vega he ran in Mean Street. Mike once again turned in an outstanding RT of .021 to Jack Gottfried’s .043. In this class the black Vega was not to be denied with a 10.551/128.95 over Gottfried’s Nova, which ran an 8.783/153.61. John Kindred led in qualifying.

TROPHY

John Joines, in his Chevy truck, led the way with a 14.217 at 92.74 mph over NHRA SS racer Brad Broaddus who clocked a time of 13.603 at 100.32 mph.

BRACKET #1

Bobby Cottrell of Whittier, CA, in his family front-engine dragster had no electronics and had to chase down Rob Strong’s five-second slower Chevelle, but took home the honors in Bracket #1 with times of 7.791, 151.65 mph over Strong’s 11.073, 130.27 mph.  A great effort for the young dragster driver.

The next PSCA race is the famed Labor Day race at the Strip in Las Vegas.
