The first pair out of the staging lanes for Friday qualifying were NHRA Pro Driver “Fast Jack” Beckman piloting Lee Jennings’ “American Revolution” Camaro funny car in the questionable left lane, with Mark Sanders in his “Mr. Explosive” Nova in the right.

Unfortunately, shortly after launch Beckman was faced with an uncontrollable situation, out of shape at mid-track and headed for the left guardwall. He repeatedly bounced up and down against the wall, coming to rest in the right lane after a slow barrel roll onto the roof of the borrowed Chevy-bodied flopper.

The 28th edition of Funny Car Fever returned to Sacramento Raceway on april 24-26 with the participation of the Nitro Funny Car Association who guaranteed 18 nitro funny cars for a 16-car field at a points-earning club race. Last year’s Funny Car Fever was won by Kris Krabill driving the “Pedaler” and comprised of a solid eight-car field, however a short field of only fifteen floppers made the tow to Sacto this year.

A single session of qualifying on Friday was all the track could handle as a cold front moved in. Recurrent problems with track prep, bumps and some brief rain showers brought up traction issues in the left lane.
