That matched up the same race for the final that ran at Fontana just a couple of weeks before, with Bluebaugh against the Walker Brothers potent El Camino, with both drivers receiving consulting advice North Carolina’s famed Pro Mod racer, Charles Carpenter. Carpenter and both teams have definitely done their homework, as current PSCA points leader Walker blasted out his best effort of the night at a fine 6.352, 220.94 mph while Bluebaugh -- with huge flames belching out of the potent Monte Carlo -- got out of the groove and did an excellent job of driving just to avoid disaster, shutting off way early.

OUTLAW 10.5

It was anyone in this eight-car field’s race as one second separated all the competitors during qualifying led by Greg Seth Hunter’s Simi Valley, Calif., 1970 Nova. The twin turbo Nova cranked out a very strong pass of 6.963 at 207.85 mph, which also was the fastest Outlaw car this weekend.

Barstow, California’s Doug Sikora and his Procharger 396-ci 2000 Ford Mustang started eliminations out right with a fine 6.991/205.35 to edge out the “Hillbilly” Grand Am of Gary Ross at 7.347/188.36. Seth Hunter advanced easily to round two of eliminations with a 6.990/208.71 over Jimmy Mock driving Rich Zehring’s 2007 GTO, whichhad new car blues at 7.896 and only 135.46 mph.

Zehring, in his own record-holding 1970 Nova with 873 cubic inches of Fulton power, cranked out a 7.182 at only 176.14 mph, which was just quick enough to defeat local talent Len Freeman’s 1987 Buick at 7.280/177.46. The 2008 PSCA Champion in the class, Ron Weems from Riverside, Calif., had no trouble advancing to the next round over Mike Keenan’s 1999 Camaro 7.068 at 199.64 mph to Keenan’s 8.324/161.34.

The favorite after qualifying was definitely Greg Seth Hunter, but he tossed away an effort of 6.957, 207.85 with a redlight start. Sikora’s very fast 2000 Mustang was the benefactor in this race with a gift win at 7.114, 203.92 mph with his Jason Pettis Pro Charger Ford. Weems laid down a fine 7.065/197.57 in his Outlaw Racing engines Pontiac Grand Am to edge out Zehring’s game effort of 7.311/189.28 and the final was set.
