Another local winner was Keith Winters in his two-tone ‘56 Bel Air, who is a first class bracket racer along with his brother Ron Winters. Keith edged out riversides Jordan Jahnke with his nova 11.888, 103.18 mph to Jordan’s 10.709, 122.02 mph. Riversides Duane Cress was closest to his dial in at a fine 11.084
It was all Las Vegas racers in the Bracket #1 class that LVMS’s Super Pro Champ, Carl Cannavo, practically owned last year. He set the pace at 7.625, but it was Jeff Farrar in a 2002 Cavalier against Becky Phlegar (above), in her new dragster for the first time. Both drivers were just getting used to new rides but Jeff picked up the trophy when Becky spun and smoked the tire instantly in her K&N dragster she purchased over the winter. Farrar ran a fine 9.123 at 141.21 mph for the win
Only two of the nostalgia Funny Cars decided to test this weekend and that really puzzles this writer. The weather was awesome and the NHRA big show is only two weeks away. Yes, Firebird ran last weekend and Palm Beach, Fla., was the weekend before, but we really expected a handful of nitro cars when the weather was just outstanding.
Nitro guys take note of the PSCA times: Troy Green, the new driver for “McCain’s Bomb Squad,” got snowed in back in Oklahoma so local shoe and one of the US Air Force’s finest, Chris Bennett, filled in quite well. After making one checkout pass, Chris laid down an extremely easy 6.12 at over 240 mph in a car that he had never even sat in.
The “Jolly Rogers” Camaro with Todd Lesenko at the wheel also stepped up after a couple of half passes and cut a fine 6.21 at 232 mph.
Local driver Jessica Cherniak put a little power in her alky burner TAFC and got her first five-second run with a 5.98 at 2401.12 mph.
Duane Shields and the Johnson family nitro burners in TAD were out making some great test runs too.
Alex Barrett had the “Rocketeer” blown Nostalgia NE1 Funny Car out testing some new parts and everything really went well for the team. They said they would really like to go nitro but that takes some big bucks.
