A lot of pride goes into their cars, as is evident upon close inspection. Light weight, short wheelbase, nasty sounding high horsepower turbocharged motors that are about a quarter the size of what you are used to make the Extreme Import class a real thrill to watch. They are almost like the fuel altereds. Believe it or not, the number-one qualifier runs as quick and fast as the “Winged Express” of Mike Boyd! These are not the underpowered sport compacts of a few years ago, now they are just smaller versions of real racecars.

The turbocharged Mazda rotary engines are also popular and that’s what powered Herberto Santiago to equally impressive 7.10/191.40 good for the number two spot.

Damon Chin started out buy running a 7.10 at 196, which he backed up with an even quicker 7.06/200.38 to become the first Import to go over 200 mph at this event. Pretty impressive.

Team USA had the first two spots as Santiago hails from nearby Kissimmee, FL. Raul Reyes Buozo was the quickest Puerto Rican with his turbo powered Mazda at 7.21/189.26.

Weisinger was so impressed with the turnout that he decided to add a second eight, so numbers nine through sixteen would also race on Sunday.

Jorge Juarbe's ’72 Datsun wound up ninth with a 7.58/186.30 from the tiny orange car from Guraho, PR.

Action heated up Sunday as Chin ran 7.176/186.36 defeated Alex Dieguez’s ‘82 Carolla that trailed at 7.81/147.04. The number-two qualifier laid down a 7.271/183.62 as Jamie Rodriguez broke.

Luis Rivera upheld Team PR with an impressive 7.174/187.39 as his turbo Mazda stopped Waldermar Vasquez’s ‘87 Toyota, which ran 7.510/189.87. Raul Reyes Bouzo then ran 8.509/123.46 when Jose Ortiz fouled.

Damon Chin then came ever so close to his first second pass with a great 7.015-199.85. Rivera fouled away what chance he had to take out Chin. Buozo then earned his way to the final with a 7.250/188.67 thrashing of Santiago who broke.

All eyes were on Chin in the final. Could he run a 6 at 200? At the green Chinn was out first, a .122 to a .193 RT for Buozo, then Chin's Toyota shook the tires, he lifted got back in it but couldn't catch Buozo who won with a 7.459/186.10. Chin slowed to a 9.25.
