Tim Tindle, from Santa Rosa Beach, FL, ran with bracket-like consistency Oct. 16, at Montgomery (AL) Motorsports Park to win the $3,000 Pro Mod final for the last Southern Outlaw Tour event of the year.

Once eliminations began, Tindle ran consecutive 3.94s in a first-round bye (when Kenny Scott couldn’t make the call to stage), and wins over Tennessee’s Shay Loveday and fellow Floridian Joe Baker in the semis. Meanwhile, ninth-place starter Robert Mathis was running low 4.0s with his nitrous-boosted ’68 Camaro, getting past Paul Gibbs, Clanton (a no-show after breaking a rear hub during qualifying), and Michael Neal.

A 4.10 pass at 176.05 mph placed Baker, FL’s Robert Mathis 10th on the Pro Mod qualifying list, but he significantly improved to 4.02 at 182.96 to beat Paul Gibbs in the opening round of eliminations. He then received a huge break in round two when Bil Clanton couldn’t make repairs in time, giving Mathis a freebie that turned into a tire-shaking 10-second effort in his nitrous-fed ’68 Camaro. He regained his form for the semis, though, going 4.03 at 180.97 mph to edge a pedaling Michael Neal, then ran another 4.03 at 182.74 mph in a runner-up showing against Tim Tindle.

In the all-Florida final, Mathis left with a solid .016 light to Tindle’s .045 reaction, but his 4.03 at 182.74 was not nearly enough to hold off a 3.95 charge at 188.99 mph by the heavy equipment company owner.
