The 356 small block Chev powered LX Holden Torana of Jim Bolovinos had the front wheels hanging in the air on every pass. The bad news was that in the first round despite a good light he bowed out when he broke out.  Australia held its first official Cacklefest during the second night of qualifying for the Nitro Champs. The name Cowin might be pretty familiar to most of you and like many American fuel racers Graeme Cowin started his career in altereds – fuel altereds. The Cowin and Johns (nee Wendy Cowin) altered was one of those milestone cars that was around in the early seventies. Here the man himself blips the throttle on as flames reach up into the night sky.

One of the star cars at Australia’s first Cacklefest was Ash Marshall’s “Scorcher”. Marshall purchased the 392 Chrysler Hemi powered Race Car Specialties built 180 inch dragster from Leland Kolb who had toured Australia in 1966. This car is as important to the history of Australian drag racing as the Allard car is to the history of the UK drag racing scene as it was the first Australian car to run 200 mph in February 1969. The digger was restored by Dennis Young and George Bukureshliev but sadly at the Cacklefest of the 2008 Hot Rod Reunion at Bakersfield the car received very little recognition despite the tremendous amount of effort that went into restoring the car - as such the boys bought it back home.
