In the first round of the Chicago Shootout Mouhammed Ibrahim in his Mazda Rotary 20B powered M3 BMW won over eventual winner, George Rehayem in his Mazda 6 quite easily but the same didn’t apply to stopping the Euro. On dropping the chutes the car moved around and head butted the left side wall pretty heavily – bending the engine plate and rearranging the front clip. The M3 was trailered for the rest of the day.

The quickest car during eliminations was the gold 3.2L 2JZ powered Toyota Celica of Joe Signorelli that ran a 6.55 on a round one solo of the Chicago Shootout. After opponent, Mouhammed Ibrahim crashed after his first round win and couldn’t return it gave him a solo that he ran in 6.645 seconds. He lost his third round tussle to Rod Harvey’s similar Celica and as the final three all had two wins it was decided on
lowest ET of that round – needless to say a 23.83 wasn’t in the hunt.
Yep your right – how the hell can this driver see where he’s going. Well actually the Pro Compact winner, Jamal Jaafer went quite well as he ended up taking out the bracket win in his 13B Rotary powered ’72 Mazda RX3. This came together after he ran times of 7.683, 7.633 and 7.628 in a round robin effort and a bracket like 7.646 @ 172.25 mph was enough to turn back the similarly powered ’73 Toyota Corolla of Jim Magliveras in the final.

The Pro Compact bracket was run as in a Chicago Shootout style with some six cars trying to make their way to the final pairing. Jim Magliveras in his 13B powered Toyota Corolla had really rung this little car’s neck as he ran 7.525, 7.526 and 7.543 times at a best of 180.52 mph. With three wins he made his way to the final against Jamil Jaafer however the pretty little car ran into problems in the money round with a 23.834 reflecting this.
