Frank Grossi’s GT/AA from nearby Upland, Calif., was on top of the qualifying field in Super Stock with his 9.125 ET followed by Eric Bell from Chandler, Ariz., in his ’70 Dodge Challenger and Fred Moreno in a SS/GA ’69 Mustang.

In Stock Eliminator it was Andrew Durham’s 2011 Dodge Challenger AA/SA out of Arcadia, Calif., taking the No. 1 slot running 9.637 ET. Robert Pond’s A/Stock ’67 Fairland was second going into Sunday’s eliminations.

Sunday morning saw the rains come, postponing the start of eliminations to the mid-afternoon, and then track officials stopped competition due to darkness about 7:30 p.m. with just over 80 racers left in competition.

On Monday, five-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. made NHRA drag racing history at Auto Club Dragway by becoming the first driver to win in six different NHRA categories during a career.

In the final round of Super Comp, Coughlin in his JEGS dragster beat Tom McBride by 13 feet to take the title running a 9.034-second pass at 160.46 mph ahead of McBride's 9.052 at 167.07 mph. (Donna Bistran photo)

Coughlin has now claimed trophies in Pro Stock, Competition Eliminator, Top Dragster, Super Gas, Super Stock, and Super Comp. Four other racers -- Scotty Richardson, David Rampy, Greg Stanfield, and Peter Biondo  -- have won in five different classes, but Coughlin now stands alone with six.

Thomas Bayer, former Pacific Division champ then faced off against Coughlin in the finals in Super Gas. Bayer grabbed the win and the trip to winner's circle when Coughlin red-lighted at the start. Local to the Auto Club Dragway, Bayer is a resident of Fontana.
