Second round action began with Don O’Neal (Westchester, IL) driving his digger to a win over Lou Raush’s ’95 Berretta. Raush had the better RT with a .022 to O’Neal’s .047, but he ran an 8.056 on his 8.08 dial and was done for the day.

Dicken advanced to the semis by trailering fellow veteran dragster driver Ed Bousman. Dicken had a .021 package and Bousman a .038. Dicken’s .007 light was the difference.

Charlie Hamma got his round win as a gift from John Goslowsky. Hamma clicked way early and had a 24-second ET while Goslowsky chose to leg it and broke out running a 7.709 on his 7.72 dial.

The last pair in the second round was Rick Verkler vs Anthony Layne. It was no contest as Verkler had a .003 light and ran a 7.245 on a 7.24 dial for a near unbeatable .008 package.

In the semifinals the first pair matched the number one and three qualifiers respectively, Rick Verkeler and Lane Dicken. Verkeler “pushed” the tree just a bit too hard and red-lighted by just one-thousandths (.001) of a second, giving the automatic win to Dicken.

On the other side of the semi-final ladder O’Neal (#4 qualifier) raced Charlie Hamma (#6). Hamma broke and O’Neal had a single into the final round to race lane Dicken.

In the final Dicken, driving a Worthy-built dragster, had his best RT of the race, a .005 to O’Neal’s respectable .011 and he ran a 7.441/169.74 on a 7.43 dial that easily covered O’Neal’s 7.505/165.01 on a 7.47 dial.

Dicken took the win and the Layne Speed Shop points lead going into the next or three remaining races.
