A full field of 32 cars plus were on hand for this Heritage Series event, with the famed “Dinosaur” Fiat of Deitz & Ward out of Crestline, Calif., running closest to the 7.70 index at 7.702/176.77 for #1 out of about 40 cars.

In the first round highlights, James Black in his 1932 Bantam cut a perfect light only to be defeated by local talent Preacher Bobby Runyon, who has been known for his quick reactions over many years. Runyon then got a rare red light start against Dave Ward in the quarter finals. Dirty Dan Schrokosh got an odd-lot single while the veteran top Alcohol team of Bruce McDowell and Chess Bushey had to eliminate Tony Wimer’s Redlands, California-based King & Grimes machine.

In the final Schrokosch left ahead of McDowell, .035 to a .067, and that was the difference at the 1320 marker at 7.718/164.30, to a close 7.721/176.53. What a close race!  (Donna Bistran photo)

Bruce McDowell then got the odd lot single into the finals and what did he do? Just a 7.714, 177.14 mph to show he was ready! Dave Ward and Dirty Dan with Holley backing him up both left just about together, and at the win light it was Ward’s 7.763, 169.30 mph over and an off-pace 7.805/165.90 for Deitz & Ward.
