75-80 Dragway’s Run Watcha Brung II

Five years ago, this photographer ventured south to what was labeled “the Last Drag Race at 75-80 Dragway”. After sitting dormant for a few years and in disrepair, a new management team under the guidance of the Stanleys has turned around this little dragstrip on the west side of Baltimore and have brought back the sound of outlaw drag racing to this part of Maryland.

I attended the August 20th show, called Run Watcha Brung II, and despite paying the $20 spectator fee to bring you this report (“because we don’t have a press list”), and having my foot run over in the staging lanes by a golf cart (driven by a couple of big boys who didn’t even say “Sorry”), I still had a good time. Maybe the reason was the bikini contest that went off sharply at 7 o’clock, and featured more than a few lovely ladies, or maybe it was the awesome racing witnessed by a large crowd that stayed until racing completed at midnight. Whatever the reason, I can assure you a good time was had by all. The racing began at 2 pm for shakedown runs, followed by 3 pm for first round of qualifying. After the contest, racing began at dusk and continued until midnight.

The only class not to determine a winner, unfortunately, was the all-run Outlaw Pro Street (OPS), as 20 cars made the call for round one. Richard Sexton was #1 qualifier at 4.519/151.15, while #2 man, Mo Hall, had top speed on the sheets at 162.45 in OPS. Finalists Darren Eash and Charlie Dolbin split the $6,000 posted purse.

[Note: The qualifying sheets provided by 75-80 Dragway used Race America printouts that, unfortunately, only gave the winning ET, but not MPH or loser’s ET/MPH.]
