The West Coast Hot Rod Association rolled in to AAA Auto Club Famoso Raceway on Sept. 10 for the Mickey Thompson tires West Coast Finals. Not only would this be the final WCHRA event with championships on the line, it would also be the WCHRA’s first collaboration with the track and its Budweiser-sponsored Saturday Night Nitro.

Eliminations started at 6 p.m. with the Open Comp and E/Gas (11.60 Index) racers, but that’s when things took a turn for the worse. The skies had been getting darker, but then what hit next was just crazy! The wind, dirt, lightning and rain hit, the spectators scattered, and the track was shutdown. The track crew did their best to clean and dry things but the rain was just too much, the decision was made to postpone until 11 a.m. Sunday and kick things off with nitro!

On the Heads Up side of things, some of the regulars that had been out this season rebuilding/changing their programs returned at this event including current and past TT5 champions Roger Holder, who switched his N20 combo to "twins"; Rich Hoyle who updated his Nova with a new homebuilt chrome moly chassis; and Lonnie Patrick with his new "twin turbo" set up. Rob Barrios and Tony Politano were at Famoso, and Scott Graham and Mike Silva were also back and trying their hand at new classes.
