Micallef’s final round opponent was the newly crowned FIA Top Methanol Dragster champion Manty Bugeja (we understand there’s a clause in the MDRA regulations that enable a class ‘trade-up’). Bugeja had gained lane choice for the final and chose the highly favoured right hand lane. Needing a full on run to compete with the fueller in the opposite lane, Bugeja was right on the ragged edge on a wild and weaving pass that took out the finishline timing blocks just behind Micallef’s pedaling 4.8. Car owner Joe Carabott (purveyor of the finest ice cream on Malta) and the rest of the Mr Whippy crew had the bragging rights of the quickest Top Methanol quarter mile pass at Hal-Far with a 5.556/258.18 demo run in front of visiting dignitaries to fall back on.
