The Mickey Thompson Wild Street class was dominated by the Young brothers from Idaho. Kevin Young is last year’s class champion and Jeff Young finished in second place. They qualified numbers 1 and 2 at the 2012 season opener, Kevin in the top spot with a 7.520 and Jeff with a 7.613. Brian Brooks from Colorado landed in the third spot with a 7.732 in his 1966 Nova and Russ Delia Jr. and Armen Maghdessian qualified fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Ross Racing Pistons Outlaw 8.5 class is new for the PSCA starting this season and is also raced to the eighth mile. Seven cars showed up and put on a great show with some of the closest racing all weekend. Mark Washington was the top qualifier with a 5.484 followed by Gary Brandt in second, Tom Daughety and DJ Reid in the top half of the field. Cedric Washington, Jason Kenzevich and Keith Lingle filled the bottom half of the field.
Gary Brandt, Mark Washington and Tom Daughety all advanced past the first round as well. In the semis Brandt advanced to the finals when Daughety went -.275 red while Reid defeated M. Washington with a 5.267 to Washington’s tire spinning 8.354.
The final round was set for Reid and Brandt to square off. They left the line separated by only .001 of a second and Reid’s consistent Camaro held off the Mustang of Brandt with a 5.277 to a 5.529 to take the season opener win.
