Something weird was happening with Marco Maurischat’s '53 Corvette in qualifying, with an opening round 5.8 flashing up on the boards following a lazy launch, the 60 foot clocking suggesting the German hadn’t managed to demolish his PB. Second session and the same thing happened again with another 5.8 (and a 0.5s 60 foot clocking). Raising the bodywork appeared to remove the science-fiction element, and our Antipodean readers might be struck by the coincidence after the controversy in the Top Doorslammer final at the recent Winternationals at Willowbank.

After a miserable outcome to the season opener, Jimmy Ålund has been clawing his way back into championship contention after a runner-up finish in Tierp and a final round berth at the Nitro Nationals. The KW Parts/Exclusive Cars team were also looking to take maximum advantage from points leader (and low qualifier with a 6.688) Thomas Lindström’s first round exit and get the final round completed, but the rain came and, with the willing assistance of Lindström and crew, Ålund’s Camaro was rapidly pushed back to the pits with a significant opportunity curtailed.

Ålund’s opponent would have been Michael Callin and the MGC GTO with Callin being a beneficiary of Lindström’s red light loss to Mats Jacobsson in the opening round that opened up the upper half of the ladder. Callin himself had defeated Sampsa Palos at the same stage with a 6.813 (a shade off his qualifying 6.807), and gained a freebie into the final when Jacobsson was unable to make the call thanks to engine damage, but Callin was also nursing a wounded motor and is hoping to get it fixed before the next event on the calendar in Germany.
