Since there were nine cars qualifying for eight spots and the only car that hadn’t made a lap was Indiana racer Kevin Lennon in the “Shake ‘n Bake” Plymouth Arrow, he was the first car out in the second qualifying session. He hasn’t raced in the DRO series in almost two years. Lennon, who recruits his help at the track after he arrives, ran a 6.581/203 that would have gotten him in the program had he not obliterated the speed and ET cones at the end of the pass for a DQ.

So, the field was filled and all that was left was to decide the order.

The woman backing up Marc White is none other than the granddaughter of famed Chevy Top Fuel racer Jim Bucher.

White and Bowen were the next pair and neither men improved their position as Bowen had a fuel leak and was shut off on the line and White went about 800 feet before aborting his lap.

In his second qualifying run Hale, who ran an off-the-pace (for him) 5.98 in the first session, came back and ripped of a 5.763/251.86 in an effort to knock Bowen out of the number-one qualifying spot. His 5.763 was identical to Bowen’s first and best qualifying lap of 5.763. However, thanks to the U.S. 131 timing system that shows five numbers, Hale’s 5.7638 was bettered by Bowen’s 5.7637 making Bowen the number-one qualifier at the First DRO Series race at the Martin, Mich., track.
