James Hawker’s eye-catching fuschia Dodge. Tracy Hawker in his equally eye-catching purple Camaro.

This weekend the family represented big time on and off the track as, James Kimberly, Brenda and Tracy all made it to either the semis or finals in their respected classes. The family was also presented with one of the Show and Shine awards this year. A very nice showing for the Utah-based family.

In addition, this year the AA/Supercharged group of gassers was on hand at Firebird. Unfortunately, some unforeseen circumstances limited the field to four cars, but a couple of non-member racers were able to step up and expand the field to six in order to put on a better show for the fans.

Tim Brown

One of those who stepped up and became a fan favorite was the ‘49 Anglia of Tim Brown from Boise. The beautiful black Anglia has a three-foot deep paint job, and a 540-ci blown big block in a car that has a ninety-inch wheelbase -- can you say exciting to drive and watch? I knew you could. Front end high in the air on launch, the crowd loved it. However, it just could not keep up with many of the other powerhouse gassers that came over from Oregon.

Troy Owen, the Albany, Oregon, driver and tuner, drove his ‘41 Willys Coupe to the victory holding off Joel Matton in his ‘37 Chevy Coupe, 6.84 at 203.38 mph to a slowing 8.07/119.77 mph run. Owen was the class of the field on Sunday running all three runs in the low 6.80 range and was very consistent on the tree all day long.
