While waiting for the track to get cleaned the Bowens were looking at the damage from their engine explosion and the damage turned out to be much worse than first thought. They had significant body and chassis damage and burned wiring. It would take a minimum of two hours for them to change the engine and do all of the repairs. That would move the final round to at least 11:30 p.m.

Track officials and local racers pointed out that the track is subject to serious dew after about 10:30 at night and they didn’t feel comfortable sending nitro cars down the track at that time of night. So, after a conversation with the Bowen family and track officials, series administrator Jeff Burk decided that the winner of the Jake Crimmins-John Smith semifinal round would be declared the winner and Bowen would be the runner-up.
