The quickest of the turbocharged qualifiers was Troy Coughlin, who pushed his Vette to a best of 5.944/249.67. The speed was the fastest for Pro Mods at this event. Coughlin, the defending NHRA Pro Mod champ, still had a mathematical chance to repeat as champion going into eliminations Saturday night.

Qualifying for this race was brutal. Swedish driver Adam Flamholc had one of the more horrific crashes I’ve ever seen during qualifying when he totaled his car after crashing near the finish line on a qualifying lap. He is already working on having a car for the final NHRA Pro Mod race of the season.

The carnage in the Pro Mod ranks was so bad that both Mike Knowles and David Hance qualified but were unable to answer the call for the first round. In all three alternates made the field, which is almost an unprecedented occurrence.

A couple of surprise Pro Mod qualifiers at this race were Missouri part time racer Ron Muenks, who qualified his nitrous coupe with a 5.996 -- almost certainly his first NHRA National Event 5-second pass, and New York racer David Hance, the promoter of the now defunct Shakedown at E-town.

The bump for 16 cars was a respectable 6.010 by Flamholc.
