Las Vegas Motor Speedway, 2014: Ace photographer Tim Marshall catches Jim Glaze in action with his brand new ‘Renegade Indian’ ’67 Firebird. The butterflies are wide open, front wheels slightly off the surface, and the rear Hoosier tires are wrinkled as the car launches on one of its four NHRA licensing runs.

The required alcohol fuel mixture is fed through an Ederle Fuel Injection ‘hat’ and a Winsler Tunnel Ram manifold. The valves are timed through a Comp Cams shaft and use roller lifters along with 1.6:1 ratio roller rocker arms. MSD supplies the spark, while Dedenbear provides the delay ‘box’ if Glaze decides to use it.

Transferring the power to the ground is a complete Strange rear axle package which is based on the popular 9” Ford unit. A 4:11 gear ratio spins the billet steel Strange axles.

The Firebird’s chassis uses Wilwood disc brakes front and rear, with Alston Vari-shocks to snub the action. VFN provided the Pontiac fiberglass components while Percy supplied the Lexan Glass. Hoosier tires rotate inside Jegs wheel tubs. A Simpson harness and chute complete the safety package.

After four runs over three days, we ran out of time to complete the license process in just one week end. Glaze plans to attend the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona as an interested spectator, then return to Las Vegas, Feb. 15th and complete his license runs.

If you sensed my keen interest in the new car, you are correct. Jim Glaze was my main crew man for several years with our ‘Chevy West’ Pro Stock Vega and Monza. A lot of time has expired since those days, but if Glaze can put his ‘Renegade Indian’ in a winner’s circle this year, I’ll be more than just a proud papa.

Until next time.
