Speaking with some of the oval track racers who were pitted across from the nitro team, one of the racers stated, “I honestly have never seen a drag race in person and when they started that funny car up and the wind brought that smell (nitro) over, I couldn’t believe it. They’re crazy over there!”

The only downfall to the event this year was the weather.

Mother Nature has played havoc with the Rocky Mountains this year.  Moreover, she was not through yet.  Temperatures were in the cool range, cold for Californians.

With intermittent rain showers threatening, the RMR staff was in high gear attempting to get the show in.

Unfortunately, as  the evening wore on a very large cell came overhead and rain started dumping down. The drag strip was called off, but the oval track ran a heat of double deckers and then the “trailer race.” It did not seem to bother the hearty fans at RMR and even though they were wet, numerous patrons were seen leaving with smiles on their faces.

This is a unique way to promote racing in general, and for racers from other disciplines to interact and understand a little about one another. In addition, it offers fans a taste of different types of racing.

Here’s hoping that Eames and the rest of the RMR staff do not allow the weather this year to dampen their enthusiasm.  This was a unique event and the venue is a perfect place to hold it.

If you are in the Salt Lake City area next year, go check it out. It is very entertaining and worth your time. There may be some mass hysteria going on, but it’s the right kind.
