Chris Domino

The next cars up had the potential to produce low 4’s as defending series champion Chris Domino and LeWayne Brown paired up. At the green Domino picked the front wheels and charged through the top end with a 4.15 at 180.58 while Brown was on his heels running 4.25 at 169.49. The 4.15 from Domino came at a price as he wounded the motor, killing number 5 cylinder and putting him on the trailer.

Mark Jenkins came up next in his black Camaro and lifted the front end and headed toward the centerline having to shut off and coast through with a 7.80 at only 79.60.

Series regulars Paul Brandt and his blown ’96 Corvette and Richard Otwell and his carbureted Pontiac GXP came up next with Otwell legging a 4.75 at 151.98 as he watched Brandt run a career best 4.15/159.97 to slot in at number two.

After the run Brandt said, “I clicked way early, that’s why the speed was down. There’s more in there.”

Next up was the long awaited return to competition of local Pro Mod legend Jerry Hicks in his rebuilt and repowered ’63 blown Vette. While backing up from his burnout the car lost fire and crew chief Bob Mungle couldn’t get it to refire.

The last attempt of round one qualifying saw Tim Ortiz in the second Team O Motorsports Pontiac run 4.67 at124.31 to end the session.
