Friday the 13th struck Tony Schumacher at Bristol. Schumacher’s elapsed time from his opening pass on Friday in the U.S. Army Dragster was disallowed due to a malfunction with the timing system. The track scoreboard showed a run of 3.676 seconds at 330.47 mph when Schumacher crossed the finish line.

The elapsed time would have far surpassed the national record of 3.701 seconds set in October 2012 by Antron Brown in the Matco Tools/U.S. Army Dragster for DSR at Reading, Pa. Schumacher was credited with “no time” but his speed was allowed to stand, placing him 16th in the qualifying order.

“It was pretty obvious we didn’t run a 3.676, but all our data shows we ran a low 3.82, which still would have made us fastest for the session,” Schumacher said. “It’s unfortunate because we made a nice, clean run and got zero credit for it. We missed out on three bonus points we would have earned for being fastest in the session. But it is what it is.”

FUNNY CAR

Tommy Johnson Jr. snapped a couple of streaks that neither he nor Don Schumacher Racing have liked talking about.

When Johnson won the Funny Car title Sunday driving the Make-A-Wish Funny Car in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Bristol Dragway it marked his first event title since 2007 when he also won on Father's Day.

For DSR, it is the first trip to a winner's circle this season and waiting for the 10th race of a season is about as long as it's ever taken since DSR began fielding a Funny Car in 2001.

When Terry Chandler opted to fund the fourth DSR Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car team at DSR, it was her choice to hire Johnson to drive for her. The only reason it had been seven years since he lost one was he has been limit to small, part-time schedules usually to lower funded teams.
