Local racer Mark Austin in his beautiful black Willys agreed to jump in and help the group to fill out the show.

After qualifying was concluded, last year’s champion Troy Owen led the show in his Willys with a track record 6.76 at 209.69 mph to take the pole.

Mitch Chamberlin followed Owen his “Rodfather” ’51 Chevy Deluxe, with a 6.87 at 205.01.

Eliminations played out as they should have, with the higher qualified cars taking the victories.

Owen reset his track record for both ET and speed in the first round running an outstanding 6.73/211.81.

As afternoon started to blend into evening the two finalists rolled their mounts into the water box.

Last year Owen took the title by winning every race of the season and it appeared it was going to be the same outcome of this running of the Oldies but Goodies. Owen was also looking for three in a row in Boise.

Chamberlin had not won an event since 2007 and was looking to end a very long dry spell.

At the green, it was Chamberlin’s black Chevy moving first but Owen was right behind him. However, there was one small issue to Owen’s run.  The team had inadvertently moved him over a bit too far to the right of the lane and the car appeared not to be completely straight.

As Owen got past the tree the car started to fade towards the 330 cone. This did not faze the Albany, Oregon, pilot as he fought to drive his red rocket off the centerline, black tracking all the way, trying to chase down Chamberlin.

As the cars hit the stripe, the light came on in Chamberlin’s lane and the long winless streak was over. For the final numbers Chamberlin’s 6.80/207.70 covered Owen’s 6.86/207.75.
