The very, very period correct 1955 Chevy of Lonnie Gilbertson from Oregon. This ’55 is a gasser with the high riding front end, and a small block topped with a set of old school Hilborn mechanical fuel injectors. The gold metal flake paint requires one to don a pair of shades to prevent eye injuries. This won a show and shine award and also went down the dragstrip.

The featured class for this race is the AA Supercharged group out of Oregon and Washington states.

During the first qualifying session, one of the strangest events to ever happen took place.

After completing a routine burnout, Scott Wyke went for a very wild ride. The car began to get sideways and then shot forward and hit the right guard wall head-on. It made heavy contact with the wall and then began to roll over, getting high in the air.

The car came down hard on all fours and then shot forward again back into the wall, and with throttle stuck, started to do another burnout, before safety team members ran in and shut off the car.

Wyke was temporarily rendered unconscious, but regained consciousness and was able to walk away from the car.

Sunday Wyke’s back was sore and he had a slight headache. The car has some significant damage and it might be some time before it will be back on the track.
