The Dave Duell Classic is arguably the biggest, most competitive and most prestigious race for Nostalgia Super Stock cars and this year’s race proved those claims once again.

While a majority of the cars that race in the Classic are Mopars, the race is open to all brands and this year there were a few Fords, Pontiacs, and one Buick on hand trying to win the coveted title.

After fighting weather for three days including a six-hour rain delay Sunday, Kevin Gass of Ledbetter, Ky., had become the first two-time eliminator champion of the event, defeating Barry Dorn’s 1968 Dodge Dart in a heads-up double-breakout race that saw Gass get the win light. Both Chevys ran under the 10.50 index in a heads-up final, but Gass broke out by less with a 10.45/126.65 lap to Dorn’s losing 10.414 at 128.43 mph.

“Man, a two-time DDC champion? This is awesome!” declared Gass after the race. He won his first DDC title at Beech Bend Park in Bowling Green, Ky., in 2011. Gass was assisted by fellow Bowtie racer Mike Moss after Moss’s ‘66 Chevy Biscayne went out in the second round.

“Good things happen to good people,” said Mike Moss, who had his own remarkable outing.

Moss’s loss in the second round came at the hand of Wally Krueger in his N/SSC Hemi-Cuda. Krueger had a great 0.016 light and ran a .053 at 119.25 that forced Moss -- who was tardy on the tree with a .091 RT -- to run the Cuda out the back door and a breakout 9.983/131.52 on a 10-flat dial. Krueger is a regular on the Victory Race Cars Nostalgia SS circuit.

Moss and his white ’66 Chevrolet Biscayne were 24 hours past his posting the No. 1 qualifying spot with a perfect 10.000 on his NSS/A 10.00 index. Moss was also the winner of the special award for best reaction time during class eliminations, posting a perfect 0.000 during his single final.
