Although Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Make-A-Wish team was eliminated from championship contention after Worsham won in the first round, the team led by John Collins advanced to the championship round for the eighth time of the year but lost to Worsham.

DSR's Matt Hagan, whose second reign as NHRA world champion ended, his Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots Dodge broke his NHRA speed record with a run at 331.45 mph. The team and now owns the five fastest runs ever in the category.

In the first round of eliminations, John Force threw away a sure thing. Cruz Pedregon dropped a cylinder right off the line and his Camry headed towards the centerline. He pumped the pedal to recover. Force got sideways right after that and drove across the center line to give the easy win to a trailing Pedregon. Force's better 5.476 at 145.58 mph was DQ'ed.
