As eliminations proceeded toward the final, Ken Spears’ wild Chevy truck kept clicking off consistent 8.60 times. The ’48 truck with a huge wing on board is a crowd pleaser.  (Brad Baker photo)

Late in the day, North Las Vegas’ Kayla Sowell driving a dragster broke out in a close race with Steve Fuller’s 7-second Corvette. The closing speed was tremendous as Kayla went 147 to the blown Vette’s 197. Reaction times were good too, Kayla at .027 and Steve with a slightly better .019 to create the finishline difference.

The final rounds went as follows:

MAGNA FUEL OUTLAW 10.5: Rick Schmidt, Dickinson ND, 4.69, 160.29 (.429) def. Doug Sikora, Hesperia CA, 5.08, 116.33 (.488)
Note: In the most exciting race of the finals, both drivers got way out of shape after leaving the line in a coma, both nearly a half-second late. Schmidt stayed with it and recorded a fast 160 while Sikora had to shut off.  (Brad Baker photo)
