Trent Wilson and Bengt Blomberg were next out. Blomberg's Firebird got out of the groove just past the 60-foot mark and shut it down to a 5.48 at 127.08 while in the other lane Wilson left hard and straight and then had the rear wash out on him past half track. Wilson masterfully got the Camaro slowed and straightened out to coast through the lights at 5.13/100.22. Wilson was so sideways his sponsor markings on the door, Alamo Auto Parts, could be read from the staring line.

E.J. Hickl brought out the '41 Willys Crimeboss entry with his old Roots blower and paired up with David Sangster's Corvair. Hickl had trouble getting wheel speed on the burnout and had to repeat it with no better results. At the green Sangster left and posted a pedestrian 5.02 at 137.07 as Hickl pedaled a 4.60 at 160.09.

The final runner in qualifying session one was the last winner at Ben Bruce Memorial Airpark Raceway, Tim Ortiz. Picking up just where he left off last time, the Pontiac ran a straight and effortless 4.27 at 169.62 to grab the pole after the first go.

After one session only three cars dipped into the 4-second zone.
