Qualifying Round Three

Going into Q3, Scott Stanger, Chris Davis, Richard Townsend, and Jon Rice were on the outside looking in.

As the six o’clock hour approached the air temperature cooled slightly and the track temp was around 93 degrees -- there was another real possibility of something special happening again.

Steven Densham

That is exactly what happened. Reigning World Champion Steven Densham has won his fair share of events at Firebird, and whose father, Gary, tunes the car, reached into their bag of tricks and pulled out a jaw dropping 5.72/243.28 driving into a stiff head wind with one of most period correct cars on tour, displacing Hodgson who dropped to number two.

Jumping up to number three was Dan Horan, who was being assisted by Special Guest Tuner, Dale Pulde, jumped into the Seventy Club with a nice 5.79 at 247.07. Rounding out the top four was Cory Lee on the strength of his Q2 run.

The second four was led by “Hollywood” Kris Krabill and his 5.87/231.79. Fifth was sentimental favorite Wally Giavia and his 5.90.

Richard Townsend

Don Hudson

Jumping from the outside to the inside was Richard Townsend and his Kevin Pointer-tuned “Nitroholic.” On the bump was Don Hudson who anchored the quickest funny car field in track history at 6.00/238.60.
