Qualifying Round Two

Twelve cars made the second qualifying session on Saturday morning and the wind had subsided slightly, blowing only 10-15 miles per hour straight up the track. This, combined with more rubber on the track and great temperatures, would have the crew chiefs getting very aggressive with their tune-ups.

Ryan Hodgson

The conclusion of round two had Canada’s Ryan Hodgson on the pole with a 5.75/251.67 pass, which reset both ends of the track record held by Jason Rupert. Right behind Hodgson was Steven Densham in the “Teacher’s Pet” Camaro tuned by his father, Gary, at 5.76/248. Third was Cory Lee, at 5.84/249.63. Hudson in his Trans Am sporting the repair to its nasal fracture held down the bump at 6.08.

The real feel good story of the session was the lap made by Wally Giavia who ran a career best 5.90/241.54 lap to secure the fifth position. Giavia and crew chief Pete Jensen made some significant crew changes over the winter. Giavia brought on Toni Schotz over from Dan Horan’s team and Michelle Read, clutch tuner extraordinaire onto the “G-Men” team for the 2016 season. After a rough first outing at Bakersfield, the team was rewarded with excellent run with no damage to the engine what so ever.
