“Lady Elaine”

Rounding out the eight-car field was a fan favorite “Lady Elaine” Sellers and her Chevy II flopper. Elaine and her husband/crew chief, Ron Sellers, did not make the decision to venture to Idaho until Monday of the event. Which isn’t that big of a deal, except the car was a bare chassis sitting in their shop in Spokane. Loads of determination, a couple gallons of coffee and Red Bull, and the Sellers were sitting in the pits at Firebird on Friday morning. At 3 p.m. the team got a chance to make a test hit. The plan was to go to 300 feet, but it appears Elaine had other ideas as she drove the car straight and true to 1100 feet and shut it off, she, and the team was rewarded with a low 7-second, 144-mph effort. Smiles were abundant in the Lady Elaine pit area.

As Saturday and show time rolled around the eight cars paired up for the first round of the Chicago style event.

Huge burnouts and side-by-side racing was the order of the evening. It does not get much better than side by side 6.60’s and both cars running 211 miles per hour. It was a promoter’s and racers’ dream.

After the two preliminary rounds, the final was determined to be between the two burnout kings, Huegli and Howland.

Greg Howland

As the sun sat behind Pepper Hill, the two combatants rolled through the water box and Huegli and Howland set for to perform 1000-foot side-by-side burnouts.
