On Two Wheels

The welcome return of ACU Top Fuel Bike at the Summernationals, thanks to input from the organizing club and meeting secretary Kathy Taylor, ended up with veteran Steve Woollatt (shown) besting the efforts of Chris Hannam and Rene van den Berg, qualifying low with a 6.3680 before running a class low ET of 6.2407/217.19 (a nudge away from his 6.231 PB set late last year) to defeat a lane crossing van den Berg. The Dutch rider was also celebrating his own PB numbers having run a 6.3679/226.74 in the semis to defeat Hannam with the speed setting a new ACU Top Fuel Bike TS mark.

ACU Pro Stock Bike had reigning class champion Alex Hope pick up where he left off at the European FIM-E event the previous month with another win, this time over class veteran Len Paget with a 7.3413 to a 7.4438. The margin of victory was a fair bit closer that the ETs suggest as Paget’s quicker RT put just about a bike length between the pair at the finish line stripe.

A surprising small field in ACU Super Street Bike saw an eight bike ladder rather that the sixteen we’ve become used to, but Steve Venables (shown), like Hope before him, carried his European form through to domestic level with the class win over Richard Hann, running a 7.1775 to take the trophy. Ven didn’t have all the numbers in his favor, as 2015 champion Garry Bowe had qualified low with a 7.1932 but wheeled out of eliminations in the quarter-finals, and team mate Graham Balchin recorded a very quick 7.1350 from his Kawasaki ZX12 in the semis but left a cherry on the tree handing Hann a passage into the final.
