A big part of the JEGS Summer Door Car Shootout is the overwhelming amount of prizes distributed to competitors, many of whom don't advance to the late rounds. Friday's specialty award winners included Tony Atchison (Greenville, IL), who took home a Flo-Fast Fluid Transfer system as the “Flo-Fast Lucky Dog” recipient; Tyler Horner (Centerville, TN), who earned a complimentary set of Wiseco pistons as the Wiseco “Oh So Close” Award winner; Rod Schaeffer (Trenton, IL), winner of a $500 FTI Gift Certificate as the FTI “Be .50, take .00” award; and Bill Hooker (Herrin, IL) who earned the Friday “Bottom Bulb Bonus,” a free entry to the 2017 Kentucky Bottom Bulb Bash. With the Friday event win, McKague also earned the Friday Milodon Bonus, earning him a Milodon oil pan, pump, and pickup in addition to his cash prize.

Saturday brought the busiest day of the JEGS Summer Door Car Shootout schedule, including the BRODIX $7500-to-win main event, as well as the Racing RV's Quick 16 and the King of Illinois Shootout presented by Ohio Crankshaft. The morning began with a complimentary breakfast cart traveling through the pits, providing free donuts, coffee, and juice courtesy of Accelerated Graphics.

Max Peterson

Once on-track action got underway, the BRODIX main event may as well have been renamed the Max Peterson show. The veteran Nebraska-based racer entered two cars in the event, and had both entries still in competition in the seventh and quarterfinal round. There, driving his SBC powered Pontiac Gran Prix Peterson defeated Brandon Bergschneider (Waverly, IL) to earn a bye into the final round with that entry. Jeff Wright (Muncie, IN) wheeled his Chevy II to a quarterfinal victory over last year's BRODIX Main Event winner Zach Schlumpf (Owensville, IN).

Peterson then returned to the lanes to wheel his second entry, a third generation Camaro in the final pairing of the round. There, he was unable to capitalize on a reaction time advantage alongside 2-time SDCS champion Rob Kropfeld. Peterson broke out, advancing Kropfeld to the semi-final round.

Rob Kropfield

In the semi-final, Kropfeld (Hamilton, OH) drove his beautiful Vega wagon to the win over Wright, putting him one step closer to becoming the first driver in JEGS Summer Door Car Shootout history to win the main event on three different occasions (He, Jensen, McKague, and Andrew DiPiazza have each won twice). Kropfeld's hopes were dashed in the final round, however, as a .498 red light eliminated him from competition and capped a phenomenal performance for Peterson.

Saturday Specialty Award winners included Steve Hohimer (Henderson, KY), who took home a $500 BTE Gift Certificate as the “Lucky Dog;” Brian Folk (Kansas City, MO), who earned a free set of Hoosier Drive Tires as the Hoosier “Oh So Close” award winner; Tom Barbero (Wenzville, MO), who got a complete APD Fuel System as the APD “Be .50, take .00” award winner; Bill Frank (Jefferson City, MO), who earned an entry to the 2016 Southern Footbrake Challenge as the “Bottom Bulb Bonus” winner; Brian Whitworth (Corydon, IN), who wowed the crowd with an epic half-track burnout during the 2nd round of competition to win the Mickey Thompson Tires Best Burnout Award; and Mike Crick who took home a $500 JEGS Gift Certificate as the recipient of the JEGS Wheelie Wagon Award for the best wheelie of the day.

During BRODIX Main Event competition, racers and crew members were treated with complimentary ice cream at the annual Butch Daugherty Memorial Ice Cream Social, presented by Ellis Trucking.
