Wayne Newby

The opening round had Newby taking on Splatt in what proved to be a one-sided contest with Splatt fading in the second half of the track, enabling Newby’s 4.807 through. Other winners included teammate Damien Harris, Aaron Hambridge, Darren Morgan and Peter Xiberras on a solo.

In the second round Xiberras opened proceedings against Hambridge in spectacular fashion.

Just past the 60-foot clocks in the left lane Xiberras’ engine let go in a massive fireball, oil got under the tyres and the car went up on to two wheels before coming back down. At about the two hundred foot mark the back slid around in a big arc with the back end almost touching the right hand wall before driving into the opposite wall head on. It spun around and went down the right hand wall backwards before coming to a stop around the 1200 foot mark. While he was OK, just for good measure Aaron Hambridge had also had a large fireball on his winning 5.08 lap with the crash and clean up taking over an hour to complete.

Round two resumed with Newby, Harris and Morgan each garnering a second win with Darren Morgan’s 4.752 being low ET of the round. Splatt could not return after cracking a blower manifold and an engine swap saw them come up short of time.
