These were competitive with the Chevys and Fords (AMX too) but without a huge performance gap. The racing in 1970 was great and drew large crowds. Dick Landy led the charge with his Hemi Dart, as well as Bill Bagshaw and a “Red Light Bandit”. Jim Clark won his share with a Hemi Barracuda, which can still be seen in action these days. Harry Holton was always known for being the engine man on Jeg Coughlin’s winning entry in the original Hemi sweepstakes at the US Nationals, but Harry also had possession of a ’68 Dart.

An above photo depicts Bob Lambeck driving an original Landy Dart at OCIR in wild Division 7 competition won the first WCS Points title with this beautiful car. Lambeck and his son Doug have continued to race with numerous NHRA national event wins, including the recent NHRA Winternationals 2016, Competition Eliminator title.

The Fords were not quite as strong except for the two factory teams of Ed Terry and Hubert Platt. And some fellow named Don Nicholson, who with help from Earl Wade, placed a Ford Cammer in a Maverick and won Ford’s first NHRA title. But Fords were there in force too, with Daryl Droke (another Maverick), Rod Amundson (ditto), and Tom Stafford with a Cobra Jet.
