I have a 405 small block Chevy which I recently rebuilt, using head studs in place of bolts. I'm having a problem with water leakage from the studs inside the valve cover. What is the correct way to install head studs to prevent water leakage? I was told to try a block sealer, but with no success.

Garet,

Thanks for writing and good question! As you have become painfully aware, the head bolt holes in a SBC go directly into the water jackets of the block. The leak you have is a common problem and is easily remedied. The only real problem may be in the removal of the head studs. If you used a new set of ARP's you've got it made because they have a hex wrench socket broached into the end of the stud making removal a cinch. If not, good luck! Seriously, if not you will probably have to "double nut" the studs to remove them. Drain down the coolant system first, then remove the head studs one at a time and liberally coat the threads that go into the block with ARP thread sealant or Permatex Teflon paste, not tape. Screw in the stud hand tight only and then coat the washer and under side of the nut with ARP moly paste. Torque each nut to spec. as you go and when your all done give each nut one more check. If you follow this procedure you will be leak free!

Hope this helps,

Jay Roeder.
